Understanding the Trifecta of Light Layers

Creating mood and ambiance for any space requires the basic understanding of lighting fundamentals. Let us take a look at how three lighting layers utilize function and aesthetics to curate a lighting masterpiece.

The First Layer

Usually functional, ambient lighting provides the basic foundation for any lighting plan. Ceiling fixtures such as pendants and flush mounts establish the central artificial light source for any interior space and aids in the internal traffic circulation. Hall lanterns and semi-flush mounts also radiate glare-free, comfortable illumination when mounted on the home’s outer walls and ceilings.

To calculate the minimum incandescent wattage requirement for ambient lighting, multiply the room’s square footage by 1.5.

The Second Layer

Complementing the ambient lighting layer, task lighting focuses on specific visual functions rather than general. Lighting requirements vary by room – a stronger task lighting output needed for food preparation in kitchen is not recommended for the diffused, subtle illumination of vanity tasks in the bathroom.

To determine the room’s task lighting requirement in incandescent watts, multiply the total square footage by 2.5. Lower ambient lighting levels combined with higher task lighting levels create dramatic contrast and energy-saving solutions. If calibrated to produce equal lighting levels, the space renders bright illumination.

The Finishing Layer

More stylish than functional, accent lighting emphasizes the aesthetic features of architectural and design components. With two accent types available, decorative layer is primarily for ornamentation while focal layer is for highlighting artwork and picture displays.

Sconces draw visual interest for fireplaces and brick walls, while directional track lighting creates focal points for paintings, sculptures and prized possessions. To achieve effective results, accent illumination level should be three times as much as the ambient lighting level.
